Grant Writing Intern

Fandom Forward is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that turns fans into heroes. We’re changing the world by making activism accessible through the power of story. Since 2005, we’ve engaged millions of fans through our work for equality, human rights, and literacy. Moreover, we’ve cultivated a global community of fans who are enthusiastic about social change and ready to lead the way. Fandom Forward is a fully virtual company made up of a small team of 7 Senior Staff members and over 40 volunteers who work daily to make our mission a reality. 

For this internship position, we are looking for an undergraduate or graduate student to help support our development team (see Key Responsibilities). It should be noted that in all of our positions we highly encourage our staff – including Volunteers, Board Members, and Interns – to follow their passions and work on creative projects that align with our mission as opportunities arise.

This is an unpaid internship position but Jack Kent Cooke Scholars are highly encouraged to apply for the internship stipend offered by your scholarship program. We offer a remote, flexible schedule but interns are expected to work a minimum of 35 hours/week for at least 8 weeks between June-August 2024.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development tasks, including but not limited to: 

    • being the lead author on grant proposals and Letter of Interest (LOI) drafts, 

    • coordinating with Senior Staff and the Board of Directors to solicit edits on grant proposals and addressing edits with efficiency, 

    • working with additional grant writing volunteers on their own grant writing projects and assisting to provide edits on their proposals, 

    • working with the Finance Team to develop budgets and answer finance questions for proposals, 

    • being the lead author on grant reports and coordinating with staff members to answer grant reporting questions and requirements,

    • and other necessary tasks related to applying for grants.

  • Administrative tasks, including but not limited to: 

    • scheduling meetings, 

    • maintaining the grants dashboard, 

    • and researching new grant and development opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent writing skills, experience with grant writing or writing in a professional setting is a plus but not required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, strong project management skills, and an ability to manage multiple tasks while delivering quality work on schedule.

  • Excellent organizational skills, strong verbal and written communication, and ability to handle feedback with grace and humility.

  • A record of efficiency, professional discretion, and integrity.

  • Alignment with the Fandom Forward’s commitment to creating a novel approach to social change.

  • Interest in social change, activism, fandom, and popular culture!

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with communications, project management, and productivity platforms/software (e.g., Action Network, ClickUp, Google Apps, etc.).

  • Experience organizing in pop culture fandoms. 

  • Healthy balance between practicality and creativity, and ideally a deep appreciation for both.

  • Familiarity with fan activist methodology, cultural acupuncture, and other concepts unique to the Fandom Forward’s model of social change.

  • A strong understanding of and commitment to social justice issues and an interest in nonprofit work, activism, and social movements.

Campaigns & Community Engagement Intern

For this internship position, we are looking for a student to help support our campaigns team (see Key Responsibilities). In the summer of 2024, our main campaign will be Save Our Progress, a 2024 get out the vote (GOTV) and voting rights campaign inspired by the power that video games have in crafting narratives about our collective future and inspiring mass participation.

    • developing and executing a strategy to engage a cohort of video game fans in our ongoing campaign via various platforms (Discord, Reddit, Instagram, Email, etc.), 

    • designing and executing community events such as game nights including outreach and coordination with partners, influencers, streamers, etc., 

    • acting as liaison between community members and Senior Staff, 

    • and other tasks related to community management as necessary. 

  • Campaign design and execution, including but not limited to: 

    • assessing field and community needs and agency resources, 

    • brainstorming, co-creating an education, advocacy, or direct service action to address systemic injustice, 

    • recruiting/relationship building with partners, 

    • co-leading events/actions, 

    • post campaign analysis (qualitative and quantitative). 

  • Administrative tasks, including but not limited to: 

    • scheduling meetings, 

    • maintaining dashboards and spreadsheets, 

    • and researching campaigns-related opportunities.
