WROCK 4 EQUALITY!
Saturday October 24, 2009 is a one-day worldwide event where HPA members watch a live Wizard Rock show AND stand up for equal rights! You can join us in person in Portland, Maine, or you can join us right here over livestream.
If you're in or near Portland, Maine:
Harry and the PottersIf you're able to get to Portland, Maine Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys will be performing at the North Star Cafe (225 Congress Street Portland, Maine 04101) at 10:30 am followed by a training on how to go door to door to protect marriage equality in Maine.
From noon to 5pm, the bands and concert-goers alike will be going door-to-door. At 5pm, we will all return to the North Star Cafe for a second Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys Wizard Rock Show, dance party, and celebration.
If you're not in Maine:
Draco & the MalfoysThis is a worldwide event, so if you aren't able to get to Maine, you can still be of MAJOR help! The morning concert at 10:30am EST will be live streamed right here over livestream. After that, there will be training on how to use the phone bank system set up by our partners at MassEquality.
While the bands and concert attendees are knocking on doors from noon to 5pm EST, you'll be making phone calls to Mainers reminding them to protect marriage equality. At 5pm EST, we'll be live streaming the second concert of Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys!
Even if you aren't in the US, you can still make (free) phone calls through MassEquality's computer system at callforequality.org right here! The polls are showing that this issue is dead even - so your calling is of the utmost importance. While you're at it, think about getting together with your friends to watch the concerts and phone bank together.
HPA House Cup Competiton
Wrock 4 Equality is a one-day House Cup Competition, modeled after the House competition at Hogwarts. Our phone banking system, sponsored by Mass Equality, allows you to register your Hogwarts House. For every phone call you make, the system will automatically award points to your House. And if you're at the concert, we'll be awarding points for every door you knock on!
Just as Hogwarts has a Head of House, this "magical day of activism" has Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies) as Head of Ravenclaw, Paul DeGeorge (of Harry and the Potters) as Head of Gryffindor, Brian Ross (of Draco and the Malfoys) as Head of Slytherin, and Lauren Fairweather (of the Moaning Myrtles) as Head of Hufflepuff. Marriage Equality:
In May 2009, Maine's governor signed the marriage equality bill into law. People opposed to equal marriage for same-sex couples have organized a ballot that would repeal equal marriage, similar to what happened in California with Proposition 8. This ballot is called Proposition One, and the HPA is working with Mass and Maine Equality to stop it.
It looks like this vote is going to be close. You may be the deciding factor. There are so many of us--we need each one of you to either knock on doors or make phone calls. We're coming together to celebrate Wizard Rock, Equal Rights, and Love as our greatest weapon!
