And the winner was… Love
For a few days, I have been playing with blog ideas in my head. I was asking myself how I could write about Same-Sex marriage, Prop 1 in Maine, Prop 8 in California, and the fact that even though I am married, I still feel like my union is not the same as other people’s.
And then yesterday happened; Wrock 4 Equality completely blew my mind. Every time I think the Harry Potter Alliance and the fandom can not get any more awesome, they surprise me with campaigns like this one. All the hard work everyone has put in until now means so much for me on such a personal level.
I got married a year ago, and sadly, I almost didn’t due to Prop 8. My husband and I were one of the lucky couples who got to get married before the elections. When I heard about Maine’s Prop 1, my heart broke, I do not want anyone to have to go through what the California LGBT community went through last year—after a very well fought battle, our right to marry was taken away from us. I cried the day the result was announced; and I cried again the day the California Supreme Court upheld Prop 8.
Wrock 4 Equality, however, helped me see that we are heading in the right direction. With the help of an amazing fandom, the HP Alliance Staff, Wizard Rockers and the wonderful people at Mass and Maine Equality, we have taken a giant step towards equal rights for everyone regardless of gender identity or sexuality. While there still are people who are against same-sex marriage for whatever reason, there are so many who believe in equality… And there are so many more that are changing their minds every day. I have faith that eventually, we will live in a society where minorities will not be stripped of their rights.
On the night of the Maine elections, I will be crossing my fingers and praying for a favorable result. It’s going to be a close call, and no matter what happens, I know everyone involved in Wrock 4 Equality played a very important role in making sure no one is treated as a second class citizen. And they should all be proud of that.
In the Harry Potter series anyone who was not a pure-blood had to suffer discrimination for some time, but in the end, love overpowered hate and bigotry. Eventually, love will conquer hate in the real world too and we will all look back and will be proud that we played such an important role in changing the way people are treated.
All my love and appreciation to all those who are working to defeat Prop1.
