2009: A Year In Review

December 31st, 2009 by andrew

“‘Another year gone!’ Dumbledore said cheerfully. ‘And I must trouble you with an old man’s wheezing waffle before we sink our teeth into our delicious feast. What a year it has been!” (Sorcerer’s Stone p 304).

Indeed, Professor: what a year it has been! Why it feels like only three hundred and sixty something days ago that I was summing up 2008 and here we are approximately one year later, summing up 2009!

The Harry Potter Alliance has had some extraordinary experiences this year. Amongst them (get ready for a ton of hyperlinks!):

• Donating over 14,000 books across the world, including 4,000 to ASYV youth village in Rwanda through the first ever Accio Books!

Wrock 4 Equality combined Wizard Rock, livestream, knocking on doors, phone banking, and education on equal rights in a pretty astounding way. Over 3500 phone calls were made in one day, increasing phone calls through Mass Equality’s phone banking system by over 1200%. The event was covered by the Wall Street Journal amongst others. Though marriage equality was repealed in Maine, we transformed so many hearts and minds and will continue supporting and working for equality!

• In What Would Dumbledore Do (with an amazing web site designed as always, by Acacia) we brought the whole fan community together (Mugglenet, Leaky, Wizard Rock, HPEF, Fiction Alley, and more!) to celebrate being loyal to the spirit of Albus Dumbledore in our world. People wrote tons of blog entries about how Dumbledore transformed them, on the night that Half-Blood Prince came out, we took over Twitter with over 12,500 tweets of #Dumbledore in less than nine hours, and in the Dumbledore Movie Theater Challenge, Harry Potter fans around the world (North and South America, Europe, even Singapore) wore name tags that stated a lesson that Dumbledore taught them. We estimate that thousands if not tens of thousands wore name tags reminding them of a lesson that Dumbledore taught them.

• We received significant press on Australia’s Today Show, the front page of CNN.com, features in the LA Times, Newsweek (and Newsweek Japan), and mentions in Entertainment Weekly, Time, and so many, more – check them out here!

Magical Acts of Kindness WROCKED in partnership with GivesMeHope.com – and you can check out some highlights here where people from all over the world did good deeds for people anonymously.

• We did a ten day campaign around dealing with the Muggle Mindset of “stress as the only norm” during Finals and Holiday season.

• The first two HPA House Cup Competitions with Ravenclaw (fittingly) winning Accio Books! and Gryffindor (also fittingly) winning Wrock 4 Equality! We have less Slytherins, but they did incredibly well considering their numbers (don’t worry Slytherins: next year we’ll rob banks and you guys we’ll be so motivated nothing can stop you). And Hufflepuff, it should be noted was in the lead for the first half of both contests – I believe in you Hufflepuffs! Special thanks to our House Prefects and Heads of House, Paul DeGeorge, Evanna Lynch, Lauren Fairweather, Brian Ross, Sue Upton, and Matt Maggiacomo.

• We worked with Vlog Brothers John and Hank Green to motivate the creation of hundreds of videos, with folks lighting candles of hope for Rwanda, across the world – the best of which were played during the 15th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide in the Rwandan capital of Kigali.

• You all raised over 4000 dollars to keep us going through the extraordinary efforts of the Nine and Three Quarters campaign. This is not to mention the ridiculously generous fund raising by Leaky, Harry and the Potters, the Whomping Willows, Justin Finch-Fletchley, HPEF, and the entire Wizard Rock community - all of which are keeping us going and making this possible.

• We kicked off the New Year on January 1, 2009 with Paul and Matt’s “No New Stuff Campaign” – a New Year’s Resolution that they followed for it’s full six months and inspired so many to be engaged in conscious consumerism.

• We created the HPA Common Room on Ning, our Twitter account, a flowering of our Youtube account, and livestream! WHOO HOO!!

• Our staff saw an explosion of new volunteers (and sadly seeing some go – we miss them!) who are doing amazing things for the HPA! It is difficult to express how much the heart and soul of this organization is run by creative and committed volunteer staff. I won’t even try to name each one of you - but I am so grateful for both you and your ridiculously admirable work!

• Our chapters exploded through the roof as we now have over 50 active chapters across the world. Though small in number compared to how many we end up reaching, our chapter members are mind-blowingly, soul-inspiringly committed and creative - doing half the work of the entire organization (including donating more than 4,000 books, sorting all of the books t help them get to ASYV, spending more than 20 combined hours calling Maine, residents during Wrock for Equality, and doing unbelievable work during What Would Dumbledore Do!!!!

• We put on over ten full hours of AMAZING programming during Leaky Con (special, special thanks to Karen Bernstein), and HPA presentations at Azkatraz, Pledge 2 Protect, and the Futures of Entertainment Conferences

• New HPA merchandise (and more soon!)

• Getting well over 1,000 signatures at ipledge2protect to join the movement to end genocide

Tomorrow night at midnight we begin a new year on the heels of an amazing year for the HPA. I believe that with our incredible staff, chapters, members, and an entire community and the breadth of our scope and vision that the beauty and transformative power of this organization will continue to expand and ripen for what will be an amazing 2010.

And yes, tomorrow night at midnight we begin a new decade on the heels of a decade of Harry Potter - that saw amongst so much, the birth of the Harry Potter Alliance and our magical approach to activism. I believe that the magic that Harry has given our world and the magical activism that we have been practicing for several years will continue to expand, ripen, and flower in this new decade. I am excited, humbled, and grateful that we are on this journey together.

The Weapon We Have Is Love,

Andrew

Merry, Happy, and Blessed Everything!

December 24th, 2009 by andrew

Whether it’s Christmas, Channukah, Solstice, Eid, Kwanzaa, Yule, New Year, or Festivus (for the rest of us), this is a time of year of tremendous celebrating.

Some celebrations are dedicated to reverence (midnight Mass is tonight!) others to complete irreverence (rare to find any one in a “reverant” mood on New Year’s Eve. But regardless of tone, regardless of religion and faith, there is “holy” theme that runs through all of this holiday season. As the Earth reaches it’s darkest times of the year, multiple cultures including secular ones reach out and celebrate light.

Whether it’s the lights on the Menorah, the lights on a Christmas tree, or the big crazy ball of light that falls every year in New York City - we are all looking around at a wintry world cast in darkness and somehow it allows to see a wonderland that is decorated by light. The Christmas spirit is all about merriment and generosity and bright colors (think Santa’s wardrobe and Rudolph’s nose) set at a time of such wintry darkness. It is, in some respects, “the most wonderful time of the year” for it is a time where the darkness allows us to huddle in warmth and reach out through thought, action, and prayer to all of those still in the cold.

They say it is darkest before the dawn. But in the holiday season, the light of dawn and the pitch black of midnight intermingle in a divine yin-yang balance that the whole world is celebrating through its reverence towards birth, intention, light, humor, partying, family, singing, and so much more.

Those who do not feel included in these celebrations because they feel alienated from their friends and/or family of origin or even themselves - may be able to take comfort in knowing that there is no “should” or “have to” to the holiday season. The holiday season is a reminder that darkness is okay. Even when it hurts. Even when the cold bites and the lack of sun causes seasonal depression - the light is right here for us to bask in. So even if you feel more alienated by the holiday season - this is okay. And you will get through this!

But for everyone, may we all bask in the beautiful sight of Christmas lights against snow. Of people coming together. And children believing - believing that “reindeers really know how to fly.” If we believe it is true, together, then on some level it is. For just because it’s happening in our heads, doesn’t mean it isn’t real.

And regardless of how you treat this holiday season (whether it is the most wonderful time of the year for you or whether you just can’t wait until it’s over), I hope that it treats you well. Let the light that so many of us celebrate now carry over into those bleak winter days of January when dead Christmas trees litter our streets upon dirty slushy snow and winters that seem to stretch without end. They always do get transformed to spring. Light always does emerge. Even in the darkest days - like right now, there is a no better time to rejoice, sing, pray, and celebrate.

May this be a beautiful moment of holiday bliss for each of you. And if you’re in a “bah humbug” kind of mood, well bless you too. :-)

So Merry Everything. Happy Everything. Let light shine out on to all of us as we approach this new decade of this new century and millenium. And can someone tell Santa to please not give any coal to any one this year even if they deserve it. Coal is not good for the environment. :-) And send him some low carb cookies too. Lord knows, the man could afford to be a bit healthier so he can keep making these annual treks! :-)

Day 10.5 - The Stress is over?

December 17th, 2009 by Taekia

Hi all! It’s Taekia again!

So, I want to close off this blogging series by thanking all of you for reading our blogs and joining in the conversation, you’ve shared some of what stresses you out and some of what helps relieve that stress.  On to the last post!

You’ve spent the past few weeks slaving away – in the common room, in the library, in the Great Hall during all your meals. You’ve been staring at that stupid book for hours and hours. There is sunlight peaking in and all your days seem to blend together and you still can’t manage to figure out the theory behind that stupid Transfiguration spell. Perhaps if you had actually gone to class that day.  All college students say that next semester you’ll do better, be more prepared, actually study. And perhaps you will, maybe next year some of us will start our Christmas shopping with MORE than a week to finish, or remember to mail in our bills instead of running to the shop just before closing.  We’ll ban together and find the magic to get through it, but for now. YOU’RE DONE! So, how do you de-stress after it’s all said and done?

I have a few fantastic suggestions:

1. Sit back and watch movies all day (or TV).  A few personal go-to lazy-day movies: Transformers, 27 Dresses, and Bones (TV series).

2. Go shopping. Okay this is a pre- or post- Christmas suggestion. However, buying new shoes or really cool electronics can be theraputic (just remember not to let them take you back to a stressed place money-wise!)

3.  Bake a cake. Eat the batter. Eat the icing. Then Eat the cake. It’s entirely contradictory to Elizabeth’s exercising idea, but well sweets are AWESOME.

4.  Do something a little bit stupid like staying up too late, sleeping in past noon.

5. Play in the snow if you’re up north. Play in the sun, if you’re luckier than some of us.

6. Let your mind wander! Daydream, write a fanfic.

7. Read a book with absolutely no intellectual qualities.

8. Go to the gym or stay on your couch.

9. Do what you want to do, what you think is important.

After spending a long time stressed and working towards a goal, perhaps making that holiday dinner or finishing that final exam, it HELPS SO MUCH to say enough is enough. I’m living for me, because in the end that’s the best way to reduce your stress.  You’ll forgive yourself the indulgence, I swear!

Day 10 - Tips for School Stress

December 17th, 2009 by amanda

I used to be very much like Hermione when it came to school and stressing out about things. I would memorize everything to the letter and aim for 100%. I always worried I would do badly. If I did, then how would I get into university? get or keep scholarships? a job?

Now, after 24 years of going to school (K-12, then 11 years of university–yes 11!), I’m not like Hermione most of the time, and I want to share the tips I’ve learned along the way. Many of the tips everyone else is sharing apply, so I will focus on only school-specific stuff, but remember and use everyone else’s tips as well!

I have found that almost everything comes down to two big problems:

Pledge 2 Protect

December 15th, 2009 by malory

http://www.thehpalliance.org/pledge-2-protect/

The HPA needs 1,000 people who can take 30 seconds to stand up to genocide. Here’s how you do it:

Step one: Go to ipledge2protect.org
Step two: click on “Add Name” and start typing your name
Step three: As you type your name, a new field appears that asks if you want to send a personal message. Please type “HPA” - that way we can count it as part of 1,000 Harry Potter fans against genocide.

This is about supporting a proposal that will ensure that we can stop Voldemort-style regimes before they begin. When our leaders see how many of us are for preventing genocide, it may create legislation that will save millions of lives (and not to mention money as well) in the future.

It’s time for this real world Dumbledore’s Army to support the Order’s call to Prevent Genocide and protect millions of civilians.

Get your friends and family to sign or agree to sign and then type in their emails.

Day 9 - Relaxing Naturally

December 15th, 2009 by arletta

Hi there, welcome to day 9 of your journey to relaxation. One of my favorite things about where I live is that there are so many things to do outdoors. I live in Seattle. For those of you that don’t know about the geography of Washington State, I’m going to give you a crash course in it.

If you drive an hour and a half in any direction, you can change complete ecosystems. Seattle is in a temperate zone. To the east, we have a desert. To the southwest, we have a rainforest. We have alpine mountains in the Cascades and the Pacific Ocean only about 2 hours away. We’ve got the San Juan Islands with wildlife you don’t find here on the mainland. It’s truly a wondrous place to live. And no, it doesn’t rain ALL the time. That’s just a vicious rumor we spread to keep this place to ourselves. ☺

Why am I talking geography? You may be thinking that this sounds like school are wondering when the relaxation starts. For me, it already has. I love nature. I always have. When I’m stressed, I can go for a walk and take deep breaths or air that isn’t as polluted as you may find in other places. A plus about the rain: it cleans the air so you don’t have that haze that you may find in others cities, provided you can see it between the skyscrapers. Read the rest of this entry »

Day 8-The Seven Deadly Sins of Studying

December 14th, 2009 by Hope

Yes, to me there are seven atrocities that you can do to really mess your mind and body up while you study. This is a list I came up with myself from my practices in Buddhism, working in a chiropractic office, and my own personal experiences. These tips have gotten me through my college career up to this point, though I also commit these “sins” at times. Use them how you see fit and every point may not be right for you.

1. Lack of sleep

This is probably one of the most important points. Your body heals and reenergizes itself when you sleep. Sleeping allows your brain to get extra oxygen to help it function. That’s why you yawn, because you don’t have enough oxygen. Yawning is an extra boost of air your body needs. Now I know it’s hard when you’re pulling an all nighter, but even a cat nap is beneficial. Just resting your eyes or cat napping for 15-20 minutes can be as helpful to your body as a few hours of sleep. 15-20 minutes is right before you hit the deeper sections of your REM cycle and it’s just enough to give you a little energy. So next time you plan on staying up late, make sure you have plenty of rest the night before or have a nap planned.

2. Lack of eating

Snacks not only keep you awake because it gives your body something to do, but it gives your body energy. I don’t mean coffee, sugar, or energy drinks. I like drinking Powerade because it usually has electrolytes and Vitamin B in it. Vitamin B in all its many forms is one of the main vitamins that provide energy to your body. Also water with freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice stirred in is good too. Fruit and veggies are good snacks and produce great nutrients for your body.
This next point is very important. DON’T FORGET TO EAT BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER! I’ve done this so often. I get so caught up in studying or projects that hours pass before I realize that I haven’t eaten. Your body cannot function. If you see that you won’t have time to grab a meal, then pack one the night before. And about that breakfast thing. There’s a reason it’s called “Break Fast.” You’re breaking your fast from the previous day. Eating in the mornings (or whenever you wake up) triggers the energy saved up from sleeping. It kicks up your metabolism, and it has been proven that eating breakfast can help in weight loss. Personally, I like bananas for breakfast because I can walk to class and eat at the same time.

3. Lack of breathing

Okay, this sounds dumb because everyone breaths. But how often do you take a full force, diaphragm stretched to the limit breath? Oxygen is one thing our bodies actually NEEDS! Not the coffee or the cigarettes (I’m harping on myself), but OXYGEN! But the majority of people do not breathe regularly to our full capacity. So what you need to do is breathe with your full diaphragm. Sit or stand up straight. If you’re standing, make sure your feet are shoulder length apart with knees slightly bent. Inhale slowly through your nose. Your tummy should expand out. Keep inhaling, inhaling, inhaling until you physically cannot inhale anymore. Hold your breath for five seconds. Then slowly, through your mouth, exhale. Make sure it’s controlled by your stomach muscles. Exhale fully until you physically can’t blow out any more air. Then repeat. I like to do this three to five times at several points of the day. Even doing it just once before a test will help you relax.
A little Buddhist tip that I like to also do is imagine that you are inhaling pure, white light. As you hold your breath, it gathers all the impurities and hurt in your body. When you exhale, you’re blowing out pure black, negative energy and pushing the impurity from your body. It helps me a little more to relax and focus.
So remember to breathe, even if it’s just one deep breath a day.

Day 7- The Art of Relaxing

December 12th, 2009 by Allison

Hello and welcome to your daily dose of stress management tips from the HPA staff! I’m Allison the Slytherin Prefect, and even though you may be a Gryffindor you will want to listen in. Okay, confession time:  for three year every day of  finals I get so stressed out that I throw up before I go to school.  However that all changed we I started to work on relaxing instead of cramming 24/7.

Whenever the dreaded finals come around I feel like a dementor is following me around.  But my magic answer to these dementors is not chocolate… but art.  Now,  I know it may sound a little weird but trust me there are many reasons why just coloring a picture can help you relax.

First off, it gives you a sense of accomplishment, just Hermione would feel after mastering a spell. This sense of accomplishment always made me feel more willing to trudge on with my studying. Secondly, it makes you go into an almost meditative state, which means if you find it awkward to meditate you can just doodle, color, draw, write, or paint to get the same basic affects.  Also it helps you have balance in this stressful time of the year. This means taking a break between the left side of the brain and the right side of the brain. Just think how balanced Hermione would be if she would just take some time to do some coloring.

Now there are a few that helps me more than others. The one that helps me the most is coloring., because of it’s simplicity and how it is so hard to judge your artistic talent when all you need to do is fill in between lines. Now, if you’re like me and cannot draw to save your life, trying drawing simple shapes. If some looks like you’re crazy for drawing them, tell them this “it’s abstract art” and you will so much more like you know what you are doing.

So go out there and make some art, maybe it will become a new hobby.

Day#6 - Do Away With Stress NOW, Not Later!

December 12th, 2009 by Brenna

Hello everyone, and welcome to day #6 of Breaking out of the (Stressful) Muggle Mindset! My name is Brenna and I am an HPA staff member, a student finishing in high school and beginning college, and a generally busy person!

Stress is no stranger to me. I feel like it has been a constant companion since 10th grade, as I attempted to be one step ahead in every aspect of my life: going to college early and reading extra chapters for my classes and always planning the next thing for my HPA or STAND chapter.

However, I’ve found that sometimes trying to get ahead just puts you further behind, because you are constantly living in the future rather than focusing on and enjoying what you should be doing right now!

A major problem with stress that I have observed is using stress to impress. High school and college students try to out-stress each other, comparing who stayed up longest or drank the most caffeine the night before a test. Parents like to brag about who got into the best college or is taking the heaviest class load, regardless of how it is affecting the health of their student. And those students who say they just went over some notes and took a nice bath are looked at as slackers, or with pity that they won’t be getting a good grade. This whole “cool to be stressed” attitude is damaging to the mind and spirit. I find myself thinking whole weeks in advance: when I just get to A and finish B, my life will calm down again.

This mindset is often necessary, but is not a way to live. I had a bit of a revelation a few weeks ago as I was filling out a 10 year plan assignment for class. Read the rest of this entry »
