Day 4: Create Your Own Wand
What a week it’s been already! We’re wizards, we’ve been accepted to Hogwarts, we’re loving ourselves and our lives – and now, just like an wizard or witch, we need wands!!
They say the wand chooses the wizard – that means that wands can “read” who wizards really are. A wand can tell what your future ambitions may be, what you believe, what you’re interested in, what you’re excited about – all of these things that make us who we are.
If a wand can read those things about a wizard, and can pick the wizard they like based on those qualities, that means that the core of a wizard’s wand must become those values in order to link itself to the wizard.
We can create our own wands by writing down those things about ourselves and conceiling them inside our own “wands,” which then become our own secret reminders of our true, individual selves.
Today’s task is to create that wand. Follow the instructions under the link (or alter them based on your own creative thoughts!) and create a wand that represents who you are!
CREATING YOUR WAND
SUPPLIES: -scrap paper (for writing on)
-Hollow tube for your “Wand” (rolled up paper, straw, fishing tube, etc.)
-Decorating tools (optional)
1. Create your core. You can write (or draw!) anything you want, in any form. Feel free to write complete sentences, stream of consciousness, bullet points, a word collage, visuals, etc.
The core of your wand might include responses to these questions:
1) What words or images describe you?
2) What do you believe?
3) What do you love? (Check out your list from yesterday for inspiration!)
4) What is the most important thing to you? Most important person?
5) What inspires you?
6) What do you want to do in the future?
The answers to these questions, and your core itself, are private. You never have to share these thoughts with anyone else unless you want to. This wand is yours and yours alone, and you are going to be the only judge of it.
2. Match your core with your “wand.” This is where your wand becomes “yours.” Your wand is going to choose you – it’s going to become something that truly knows who you are – and this is your opportunity to make it your own.
Does it feel right to read your wand core out loud before you place it in your tube? Or maybe you want to read it to yourself. Maybe some other activity is calling out to you based on what you wrote down. Or maybe it feels right to just roll up that paper and put it in your wand, where it can stay secret, known only to you.
Make your own ritual as you make your wand. This is your own magic.
3. Decorate Your wand – Some wands might like to stay raw, and some might want a little bit of polish. What do you want your wand to look like?
4. Place your wand somewhere you can use it. Let this wand be a reminder to you of who you are. Throughout the week, and far into the future, the core of your wand will represent who you are. As we try and break out of the Muggle Mindset, reminding ourselves of who we are (as opposed to who others want us to be) is incredibly important. Place your wand somewhere where you can see it! Where you can take it and re-read your core. Where it will inspire you.
If you want to share your wand-making experiences, feel free to join in the conversation over at the forums. We’ll be talking about our individual wand-making experiences, and how wands can help us break out of the Muggle Mindset.
